Lose 5 pounds before Christmas

Christmas is less than four weeks away and while most people gain weight during the season, there is still time to shed five pounds before Santa visits. In order to lose five pounds in 25 days you must cut 700 calories per day. That may seem like a lot, but with the combination of nutrition and physical activity it can be done. Aim to cut 350 calories out of your diet and burn an additional 350 with exercise. Here are some tips to help you achieve your goal.

Don’t eat out

Most fast food meals contain more than half of your daily caloric needs. Meals at sit down restaurants are just as bad, if not worse. Even with healthier options, you’d be much better off preparing your own meals.

Cut sugary drinks

This includes sodas, energy drinks, and juices. They add calories without filling you up; therefore, they should be avoided. Drink water instead.

Swap vegetables for snacks

This is a no-brainer. Vegetables are the least calorie-dense and most nutrient-dense of all foods. Try to avoid dips, which add unnecessary calories.

Don’t eat the cookies

Yes, it is the holiday season and cookies may surround you. But just a single cookie can add over 100 calories to your diet. And really, who can eat just one? If you are given cookies as a gift, donate them or promptly freeze them to enjoy on Christmas day.

Interval workouts

To burn off a quick 350 calories, do an interval workout for just 35 minutes each day. Alternate 2 minutes of running in place (or up and down stairs) with 1 minute of strength building moves, such as squats, bicep curls, and crunches. Continue without resting.

Focus on holiday activities, not holiday foods

There are plenty of holiday activities to enjoy without the temptation of food. Holiday parades will keep you on your feet. Shopping and caroling are a great way to keep you active.

Avoid alcohol

This can be tricky if you plan to attend holiday parties, but alcohol is full of empty calories and even one drink can derail your efforts to lose weight. If you find a drink too difficult to resist, use a calorie free mixer and drink water between rounds. Then add an extra workout the next day.

It is possible to lose weight during the holidays if you are willing and determined. These are only a few tips that will help you succeed, however this is only a starting point and you will find there are many other ways to reduce calories, while still enjoying the season.
