Lose 10 pounds in one week with Kate Middleton's low carb Dukan diet

Few people in the United States had heard of the Dukan diet prior to Kate Middleton's wedding. But when the gossip magazines reported that both Kate and her mother had turned to the Dukan weight loss plan for her royal walk down the wedding aisle, "The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever" became an instant best-seller.

The high fat low carb ketogenic diet involves four phases, and you can lose as much as 10 pounds in the first week. Like the Atkins diet, you begin with a jump-start weight loss phase with minimal carbohydrates and maximum protein. It also includes a weight loss cookbook, "The Dukan Diet Cookbook: The Essential Companion to the Dukan Diet."

And while the Atkins plan has attracted celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Sharon Osbourne, the Dukan diet also has its star fans, such as Jennifer Lopez and Gisele, as well as the Middleton family.

How the diet works: You'll consume unlimited amounts of most types of animal protein. In contrast to the Atkins plan, dieters are advised to eat a small amount of oat bran daily to stay regular with fiber. As the diet progresses through different phases, you'll add in non-starchy vegetables, then gradually move into an alternating program where you get measured amounts of starches a few times a week.

The Dukan diet also takes an intriguing approach to maintenance. It's called stabilization, and calls for choosing one day each week to eat only protein plus a few tablespoons of oat bran.

Also paralleling the Atkins diet: The Dukan diet has its own line of products. For example, Dukan Diet Appetite and Fat Control supplements are designed to suppress hunger, burn fat and boost the metabolism.
