Los Angeles finally gets its own comic book, pop-culture and multi-media convention this weekend with Comikaze Expo. Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and 6, at the Los Angeles Convention Center the first Comickaze Expo will be the host of all things comic books, video games, movies, television, and art. Being the first year of the event the organizers have gone to no end to make this an extravaganza of genres from super heroes, to horror, to sci-fi and fantasy. There is something for everyone.
This is one of the most affordable conventions in the country. Admission is only $12 for each day at the door and if you pre-order your tickets through Groupon.com you can get and even better deal. Click here for details.
So what comic events can you look forward to? Let’s start with the guest of honor, Stan “The Man” Lee, who will be appearing courtesy of Desert Wind Comic Collectibles for signings and a special meet and greet. These events are limited and will require you to purchase tickets. Appearances by Stan are rare and the lines are always long. You can pre-order your tickets here.
Not to be outdone writers and artists from DC Comics New 52 will be hosting a panel and will be on the convention floor in full force. Come and meet Savage Hawkman artist Philip Tan, Writers Eric Wallace (Mister Terrific), Brian Buccaleto (Flash), JT Krul (Captain Atom), Joshua Fialkov (I, Vampire), Mike Johnson (Supergirl), Kyle Higgins (Nightwing), and colorists Nei Ruffino (Green Lantern: New Guardians) and Blond (Redhood and the Outlaws). The panel will be a question and answer format Saturday afternoon so bring all your DC questions.
Don’t miss The World of Batman panel hosted by writers Gregg Hurwitz and Kyle Higging where they discuss what it is like to write about the world’s greatest detective. They’ll discuss how their viewpoints affect the denizens of Gotham City.
Shane and Chris Houghton, the creators of Reed Gunther the all-ages, bear riding cowboy comic from Image Comics, will be hosting a how to write and draw comics panel. This promises to be a fully interactive panel as Shane and Chris will take ideas from the attendees and make a comic on the spot.
Other panels on creating and working in comic books include Tales of Breaking into Comics (And Writing Them Once You’re “In”), How to Make Comics for All Ages (Great for Kids!), and Indie vs. Mainstream Comics where creators discuss working for Marvel and DC Comics as well as publishing their own books with smaller publishers.
There are so many comic creators coming to Comikaze that it would take pages to list them all. Click here for a look at more of the guests who will be appearing this weekend.
There are so many great events and panels for everyone. Be sure to check the programming guide for the schedule of events.
