Los Angeles: Pan African Film Festival 2014

This year independent films made their mark at various film festivals, and starting February 6, 2014, Angelinos will get their chance to preview the best-curated cinema from 46 countries, according to The Pan African Film Festival.

PAFF will showcase 172 films, which include, 37 documentaries, 23 short documentaries, 55 narrative features, 57 narrative shorts, and 11 web series in the new category of new media. PAFF will also take the time to recognized influential and upcoming creatives in the industry, such as, actor/director, Charles Dutton, (Lifetime Achievement Award); Emayatzy Corinealdi, (Middle of Nowhere); and Tequan Richmond (Blue Caprice), for the Beah Richards and Canada Lee, Rising Star Award.

The festival will run until Monday, February 17, 2014, but passes to the films and special events can be purchased now online. The opening gala screens the South African film, Of Good Report, directed by Jahmil X.T. The screening takes place at the Rave Cinemas, Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

This year PAFF will entertain not only the indie obsessed filmgoer, but also those who like mainstream movies that star their favorite celebrity. About Last Night, with funny and sexy duo Kevin Hart, and Michael Ealy, will screen February 11, 2014, as part of PAFF's Centerpiece Presentation.

In addition to the films, the festival will host special free events, such as, the Student Fest, Children’s Fest, a Fashion Show, and Panels that take on common topics in the film industry. This year the SpokenWord fest, is hosted by rapper/actress Lil Mama. The event is set to feature some of the best poets and spoken word artists from across the nation. SpokenWord Fest takes place Sunday evening, February 9, 2014, also at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

The festival will close with the world premiere, Blackbird, directed by Patrick-Ian Polk, based on the novel by Larry Duplechan. Blackbird, cast includes, Oscar-winner Mo’Nique (Precious) and veteran actor Isaiah Washington.
