Hugh Masekela – UCLA Live presents performer, composer, producer, innovator and human-rights activist, legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela, with his high-energy band of South African musicians. The program includes music from his acclaimed 2009 album Phola, new afro-pop, jazz works and ballads plus “Grazing in the Grass,” “Stimela” and “Bring Him Back Home,” his anthemic tribute to Nelson Mandela. Articulate and brilliantly musical in a number of genres, Masekela has been a defining force in world music and the struggle for human rights both in Africa and around the world. Begins at 8:00pm. MOCA presents Dissent: Teen Night 2012– Located at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA this evening of art and live performances is inspired by the current exhibition Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974–1981. The eventaims to educate L.A. youth about the political and social roles of artists during that period. exclusively for students in high school, hosted by teens from the MOCA Apprenticeship Program (MAP). Jason and the Argonauts – The Hammer Museum’s Family Flicks film series presents a free screening of the critically acclaimed 1963 film. This retelling of the mythic hero Jason as he sails the world in search of the magical “golden fleece” and the treacherous journey and battles with mystical, monstrous creatures conjured by the magic hand of special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen. Love Bird’s Bird Walk – in anticipation of Valentine’s Day, bird lovers are invited to experience the beauty of nature and watch for birds with your sweetheart in King Gillette Ranch lasting 2.5 hours. There is a 1mile walk. Bring binoculars. Begins 8:30am. For more info: lamountains.com/parks
