Loretta Lynn awarded the Presidental Medal of Freedom

Country music legend Loretta Lynn was one of 16 award recipients of the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, today (Nov. 20) in Washington, D.C. according to news reports on the web.

Lynn, who was born in Butcher Holler, Ky.was one of eight children in the family, She started singing at a very young age, and later sang about her hometown, Butcher Holler. Loretta got married at the age of 14 to Oliver "Doo" Lynn.

It wasn't until 1961 when Lynn was finally discovered by Norm Burley, who formed Zero Records so that he could make sure Loretta had the opportunity to record records. Her first single, "I'm a Honky Tonk Girl" was an instant hit.

Loretta's biggest hit of her career was "Coal Miner's Daughter," which was also the title of an album, an award winning movie and autobiography.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was first established and given out by the late John F. Kennedy in 1963. The honor was bestowed on citizens that were deemed to have given "especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, or world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."
