As you may have already seen plastered around website banner ads, Lord of the Rings Online has gone free to play. Players itching to delve into the world of Middle Earth and bust some Orc heads can now do so without denting the bank account with another monthly subscription fee.
In the latest and largest non-expansion patch to the game a host of other features were also added beyond the penny pinching subscription model.
The patch, titled Volume III, Book 2: The Ride of the Grey Company, boasts many new features including instances that scale with your level, cosmetic items that are shareable across your entire account, DirectX 11 support, Lua scripting for interface customization and much, much more!
Much like it's Turbine predecessor, Dungeons and Dragons Online, LotRO will now offer a micro transaction model where players can purchase game features and goods like additional character slots, additional wardrobe vault slots, items and other goodies.
Existing subscribers should fear not! Although the game has gone free to play Turbine is offering loyalty packages for existing subscribers where they will still have access to all the features of a subscriber before the patch went in, but will also accrue 500 points per month to spend in the LotRO store as they wee fit.
So head on over to the official site and dive into Middle Earth today!
