Spring is officially here and the perfect time to jumpstart your creativity!

If you have been thinking about taking a one-day workshop, 10-week course, or full semester class, you’ll find what you’re looking for right here in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. You can begin studying now or plan for next month or into the summer. Here are several learning options to unleash your creative side.

  • Dance, Photography, Writing classes:

Flamenco Dance Academy – Artistic Director, passionate performer, and master teacher Virginia Iglesias shares her life-long love of dance and flamenco dance professional skills at Flamenco Dance Academy, her dance company since 1991. Classes for beginning through advanced learners in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Alameda. Check class schedules, fees and locations at the website.

Dance Mission Theater – This non-profit, multi-cultural dance center, conveniently located in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, offers a full range of dance instruction. With classes for adults and children, anyone with a desire to get up and dance, and know how to do it, will find the dance just right for them: hip-hop, salsa, modern dance, Afro-Caribbean, samba and even taiko drumming are here. Jack London State Historic Park – This amazing and historic state park offers more than one day hikes; this is true learning location. Photography workshops and wildflower hikes will make nature lovers out of city folks in no time at all. Coming up in April, Jack London State Historic Park presents “How to Take a Good Photo,” a class led by professional photographers from Silverman Photography, April 26 from 8 am to 4 pm, $50 (includes parking fee). San Francisco Studio School – This small-by-design learning venue in downtown San Francisco and close to everyone’s favorite district, North Beach, “encourages accelerated learning, depth and continuity of effort in the student’s search for meaning in his/her work.” Well put. The art school offers programs in Painting and Drawing, Mixed Media, and Photography. Though not inexpensive, tuition here is less than at other art schools for the quality and length of instruction, plus exposure and connection to the professionals who teach here. The school operates on a trimester schedule, plus offers Winter and Summer Workshops.

The Writers Studio – Offering fiction writing and poetry workshops since 1987, The Writers Studio, San Francisco is the West Coast branch of the famed New York Writers Studio founded by Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Philip Schultz. The Writers Studio, San Francisco opened in 2007 and follows the model Philip Schultz developed to nurture the voice of beginning to experienced fiction writers and poets. Ten-week class sessions begin several times a year.

The Writing Salon – Founded in 1999, The Writing Salon is a school for beginning to advanced adult writers. Classes include fiction, poetry, memoir, screenwriting, playwriting, travel writing, food writing, and more. Classes in San Francisco and Berkeley.
