Looking for a new companion? Consider adopting a "less adoptable" pet

Information updated on 10/5 for Save-A-Pet Adoption

What do big black dogs, black cats, FIV+ cats, shy and special needs animals all have in common? They are often considered less adoptable by many people for these and other reasons and are passed over in favor of younger, more outgoing animals. Certain breeds like Pit Bulls and Rotties fall into this category as well. To help highlight these animals, Petfinder has designated September 17-25 as Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week.

Because the wait for a home is often much longer for these animals, I’ll be focusing on a group of these animals each Saturday in September. We’ll select some dogs and cats from several shelters and rescues in hopes that someone new will read their story and consider adding them to their home. Please cross-post, Tweet and pass along these animals and we’ll see how many we can get adopted.

The slideshow to the left has photos of all the animals featured below.

Miss Callie is a beautiful, outgoing, sweet Calico cat that was rescued by the Cat Catchers of Chicago and just loves people. Before being abandoned outside, she must have had nice home because she loves people. Her only downside is that she is FIV+. Cats that test FIV+ can live a long, healthy life with few health issues, but should either be an only cat or live with another FIV+ cat.

Yogi is the wise sage of the dog room, has the softest coat and just loves lots of attention. He's also smart and well-trained and keeps getting passed over because he's pushing 9-years-young.  He has tones of experience in a home, should settle in quickly and deserves nothing more than a loving family for his golden years.

Young at Heart Pet Rescue

Winter has a few strikes against her – she’s a 6-year-old, black cat who is a bit skittish and bitey around new people – all traits that make it a more difficult to find a home. She’d had a rough start and had been treated poorly by cruel people before she was rescued. However, she really does love people and other cats, once she gets to know you, and she is a loving, purring machine. The problem is no one comes back to spend enough time with her and now she’s been waiting for a home longer than anyone at YAH. Through September 17 Winter’s adoption fee is 50% off as part of the national Back in Black Adoption event aimed at promoting the adoption of black cats and dogs.

Northern Illinois Samoyed Assistance (NISA)

Rascal is a beautiful puppy that would have had no problems finding a home under normal circumstances. Because he has limited sight, he often growls and is stand-offish around strangers, but is very loving once he warms up to people. Rascal would do best in a ranch-type home with a fenced in back yard and he’s house and crate trained. He’s done well with kids over 10 and is not only friendly with other dogs, he may benefit from being in a home with another dog. Because of his special needs Rascal’s adopting home must be thoroughly screened.

Hopkins is a senior fellow who lost his home after he developed diabetes and his family couldn’t afford to take care of him. He lived with kids, a small dog and another cat and fit in well with the family but can be stressed out from younger kids. However, Hopkins is a loving, snuggly, lap cat who is looking to spend his golden years in a loving home. He does need insulin shots twice a day and is a great sport about getting his shots.

Anne Marie is a beautiful girl that was dumped at a high-kill shelter after raising her puppies. She’s mellow, sweet and loves to play and act silly, but this beautiful dog is overlooked because of her breed and because she’s a big black dog. At five years young, she has many years to give a family if they would just give her a chance. Good news - Anne Marie has found a home.
