Longwood school security guard dies in Yaphank crash

A security guard for the Longwood School District was killed Saturday night after his car crashed into a utility pole in Yaphank, Suffolk County police said.

According to police, Daniel Methven was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala north on Yaphank-Middle Island Road when his vehicle collided with a utility police around 8:50 p.m. The car then came to rest in a wooded area off the side of the roadway, cops said.

Detectives said Methven was on duty as a security guard for the Longwood School District at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office. The vehicle, which appeared to belong to the school district and had official license plates, was impounded by police for a safety check.

A spokeswoman for the Longwood School District could not be reached Sunday morning for comment.

Detectives are continuing the investigation and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
