While the majority of WSB Radio’s listeners never met him in-person, they almost certainly recognized the voice of Captain Herb Emory, a hero to Metro Atlanta motorists. For many, the sometimes brutal trek to and from work was made just a little bit better because of the reporting by WSB’s Triple team traffic led by Captain Herb Emory in the sky over Atlanta’s interstates.

On Saturday April 12, 2014 Emory became aware of an auto accident near his home on South Burnt Hickory Road in Douglas County and went to help. According to WSBTV, Emory suddenly became ill while assisting injured motorists. He was transported to Wellstar Douglas Hospital where he passed away shortly thereafter.

Emory first broadcast on the Atlanta airwaves in 1971. He worked at several metro area radio stations before settling in at WSB Radio and TV. Emory’s radio and TV colleagues remembered him on-air Saturday afternoon. Many of them noting that Emory loved his job and helping others. WSB’s Clark Howard opened the phone lines during his broadcast on WSB Radio for listeners to call in to share their memories of The Captain.

Throughout his career Captain Herb Emory won numerous awards; in 2012 he won the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Excellence in Motorsports Journalism Award and in 2008 he was inducted in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. Emory 71, is survived by his wife Karen and son Joseph.
