The Longmont Police Department has received an offer, from a concerned resident of Longmont who wishes to remain anonymous, to increase the reward by $1000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the vandalism to the headstones and grave sites at the Mountain View Cemetery.

The cemetery has seen repeated vandalism, the latest incident involved the destruction of a Civil War memorial statue of a soldier, the head of which went missing and was later recovered. According to a Longmont Fire, Police and OEM Facebook post: "The police department recovered the head from the civil war statue this morning. It was found at Fire Station 1, 1070 Terry St., Longmont. Police believe the head was dropped off shortly after the press coverage. The head was found by a firefighter today, (08/13/13) at 0745 hours. The head was not on the property on Sunday. The head was sent to a lab to look for DNA. The swabs will be submitted to CBI’s crime lab. (Colorado Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab)."

"The increased donation offered makes a reward of up to $3,000 for information leading to the arrest. The donor, who has family buried at Mountain View Cemetery, was heartbroken by this disgraceful, disrespectful act of vandalism. The Longmont Police Department knows that other members of our community are also outraged by these acts and we are thankful for this offer. Through our partners, Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers, we will be offering this additional reward money. Anyone with information on this crime, or any other crime, is asked to call the Longmont Police Department at 303-651-8501 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers provides a way for members of the community, like you, to assist local law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime. Crime Stoppers knows "someone other than the criminal has information that can help solve a crime". Crime Stoppers offers ANONYMITY to people who provide information about crimes AND pays rewards when the information supplied leads to an arrest. Tips can also be provided to the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers via the internet at or by Text to: 244637 (crimes) Keyword: NOCO (followed by your tip)."
