It may not feel like it now, with snow in and out of the forecast, but spring is set to be rolling in soon! With the arrival of spring will come the abundance of bicycles on the roads and trails we have all grown accustomed to over the years.
Teaching kids to ride a bike is not as simple as balancing on two wheels. As kids' cognitive and physical skills are still developing, it is important to provide some context, background knowledge and practical experience for kids, in order to learn balancing, visual, and bike handling skills. All this is invaluable prep in order to avoid other riders, cars, debris and even an occasional squirrel or prairie dog.
The City of Longmont, in conjunction with St. Vrain Valley School District and LiveWell Longmont, has received funding from CDOT for a Bicycle Rodeo kit that will be coming to schools starting the Spring of 2013. Currently, teachers from (SVVSD) elementary schools are sought, as well as volunteers to assist with the rodeos. Elementary teachers from St. Vrain Valley School District will be paid for the training for $25.00/hour for up to two hours. Trainings will be held on Sunday, March 3 at 2-4:30 and Monday, March 4 from 9:00 – 11:30. Additional training sessions will be offered if needed.
Reservations are requested as space may be limited, as is teacher pay. If you are a bike enthusiast, or a parent who wants to help your child learn to ride better and safely and would like to help out, we look forward to seeing you at the training! To sign up, please contact:
