Longest serving military dog retired with honors

Tanja, a Belgian Malinois has been honorably discharged after completing her deployment with the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, ending a 12 year career that included service in five war zones around the world. Her duties included sniffing out explosives and drugs, as well as apprehending terrorists and other criminals.

Tanja, worked with six different handlers over her career. Dogs and their handlers spend all their time together. They train, eat, sleep and fight side by side.

“She has been a definite asset during her military career,” said Tanja’s former handler Staff Sgt. Robert Wilson. “I am so glad I had the opportunity of working with her. She was definitely the best dog I have ever had.”

“Tanja remained vigilant even in the final days of her long military career,” added her most recent handler Tech Sgt. Roseann Kelly. “She recently scared off an intruder to a military base.

Known for being the longest serving dog in the armed forces, Tanja can now look forward to enjoying herself and relaxing alongside Kelly, who is adopting her.
