SMU got 16 points from Shawn Williams and 15 from Jalen Jones, but not much else as SMU dropped to 1-4 in Conference USA, losing 63-54 at UT El Paso.
Nick Russell also scored 12 for the Mustangs, but no one else scored more than six for SMU.
UTEP, meanwhile, had four players with at least eight, led by Jacques Streeter's 18.
The Miners never trailed in this game and maintained a double-digit lead since going up 31-21 with 2 1/2 minutes to play in the first half.
SMU seemed to dominate inside, outscoring UTEP in the paint 26-12, but UTEP's long range and free t grow shooting made up for it. The Miners outscored the Mustangs 24-6 from three-point range and 21-16 at the free throw line.
15 of Streeter's points came from beyond the arc, going 5-for-5 from that range.
The three-pointers gave UTEP the lead in the first half, while 17 free throws hoped them distance themselves from the Mustangs in the second.
