Long Island Schools Guide: Sylvan Avenue Elementary School

First day of school at Sylvan. ZF Photo

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School is largest of the three elementary schools in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. This school was opened in 1965 and is on the same grounds as the junior high school. It educates all children that live north of Montauk Highway in Bayport and Blue Point.

Doing their best to nuture and educate, the principal to the school aides all care about the students.  There are many educational and fun activities at Sylvan to encourage learning - books & beyond, science quest and publisher's night. With an active PTA, parents are also involved in many classroom projects and school activities.  Other great things at Sylvan are the pre-paid debit system for school lunches and a before care and after care program done right in the school.

When your child is taking that big step of starting Kindergarten, Sylvan has everything to make this transition go smoothly. They have pre-K story time, snack visits and playground visits. The Kindergartners are also mostly separated from the rest of the school with their own playground and drop off and pick area.

The big negative for Bayport-Blue Point schools is they do not have buses, which means all children must be dropped off and picked up. It does get a little hectic with every parent finding a parking spot and walking into the school to get their children.
