Robert Schiavelli of Rockville Centre, N.Y. was issued two court summons for laughing too loud in his own home the "New York Post" reported on March 6. A neighbor complained he could hear the 42-year-old man with his hearty laughs on Feb. 12 and Feb.13 from across the driveway.
Schiavelli has medical problems such as seizures and other neurological problems and he says he laughs as a defense mechanism against the heckling of his neighbor, Daniel O'Hanian. The judge didn't find it very funny and refused to throw out the complaints at the arraignment on Tuesday. Schiavelli, who lives with his mother, could face up to $500 in fines or 30 days in jail.
The laughing man was loudly chuckling because his neighbor often criticizes him because of his disability, so he just laughs at him. A detective who responded to the neighbor's protests wrote a ticket each day at 6 p.m. for "disturbing the peace."
Schiavelli, who graduated from high school as a special education student asked:
“What else are you supposed to do when someone calls you a retard?”
Evidently, the feud has been going on between the neighbors for many years.
