After playing Florida International to a 2-2 draw last week in an exhibition, the Long BEach State women soccer team dropped its season opener 1-0 to the visiting Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Friday night at George Allen Field.
The Beach outshot the Lumberjacks 14-4 in the match, but it was Northern Arizona who was able to break through with a goal at four minutes into the second half by Malia Tano which proved to be the game winner.
"We made a mistake, and they capitalized on it," head coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. "That was a nice goal, although i wish we didn't pass the ball to them."
The Beach opened with a flurry, out shooting the Lumberjacks 8-0 before the visitors had its first good look. Senior Eileen Maes had two chances, including a header chance at the 6:15 mark which just went off the post.
"We just lacked composure," Ingrassia said. "especially as the game went on, we began to play too fast, too frantic, too individual. You need to have composure to break down a team."
Long Beach hits the road for two games, starting Thursday as they visit #16 Santa Clara for a 7pm showdown.
"We have a tough road trip coming up," Ingrassia said. "This should be a good test for them."
