Millions of international visitors are expected to descend on London this summer for the ultimate of sporting contests, the Summer Olympics. With hundreds of sporting events already sold-out, as scheduled for the July 27- August 12 period, any ticket-less visitors will need to be entertained.
Every Olympics has created a “Cultural Olympiad” of sorts, where visitors can also attend art, dance, and music outings – as a substitute for, or as a relief from, all the rounds of competition. Traditionally, the majority of these nondescript outings have barely lit a spark of interest among the sports-oriented and partying fans.
This time around is different, however. If early reports and rumors hold true, the London Olympics Organizing Committee’s entertainment plans are on-fire.
Stealing the spotlight from strolling musicians on city streets, undistinguished bands on makeshift stages, and formal orchestras in stuffy auditoriums will be mega rock and pop acts, that Olympic organizers recognize are hugely popular worldwide.
On Tuesday, the London Evening Standard reported that the spectacular Pink Floyd will highlight the closing ceremonies. The last time the group performed was at the Live 8 event held in 2005. Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason are anticipated to take the stage in what may be the most memorable Olympics culmination ever.
The legendary Sir Paul McCartney, as has been speculated, is tapped for either the opening or closing ceremonies.
Also, pop legend Madonna is expected to make a comeback during these Summer Games. Last fall, it was reported that she will be performing in London’s picturesque Hyde Park for tens of thousands of fans, in support of her new album release.
Further, a glimmer of hope exists for Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Queen – with social media buzz brewing about their possible shows.
These awesome entertainment options may just be the answer for visitors who, with or without tickets, may just skip the preliminary, mundane rounds of such sports as pistol shooting, rowing, or equestrian dressage.
