The countdown to the London 2012 Olympics continues as the games are now less than six months away. Recently we investigated ticketing information and travel packages as well as some of the more popular Olympic sports and the venues they will be held at. Today we will look further at some of the other sports that will be contested in London.
As the hosts, Great Britain will be firmly behind its own athletes and hoping that they can achieve success throughout the games. 38 year old women’s world record marathon runner Paula Radcliffe is currently in Kenya at the British Olympic training camp. Having failed at her previous Olympic marathon attempts Radcliffe is intent on staying healthy in order to achieve the success that has eluded her in the past.
The London Marathon Route will begin and end at The Mall in Central London. The famous road that runs from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square will be lined with Olympic spectators as well as regular tourists. The race route will also pass other London landmarks including St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Hill and the Houses of Parliament.
Platform Diver Tom Daley is the 2009 world champion and is expected to medal in London. Though just 18, Daley has prior Olympic experience. At the Beijing games, 14-year-old Daley finished 7th in the 10 meter platform dive and 8th in the synchronized 10 meter platform dive.
All diving events will take place at the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park located in East London. The Olympic Park will be the center of the games as a number of other sports will be held here including basketball, water polo, BMX, handball, swimming, synchronized swimming and all track and field events.
Track cyclist Chris Hoy won three gold medals in Beijing as well as one gold in Sydney and a silver in Athens. At 36, Hoy will be hoping to add to his medal tally this summer in London.
The track cycling events will take place at the Velodrome located in the northern part of Olympic Park.
Next time we’ll investigate special events happening throughout London for visitors to the Olympic Games.
