Lombard Street; America's most crooked street

We've all heard about it but have you actually been there? Lombard Street is a much talked about tourist site and it is high time you went. Be a tourist in your own city!

Lombard Street runs for 2 1/2 miles in the Russian Hill neighborhood. The crooked part, the part of Lombard you want to see is between Hyde and Leavenworth. It is a dangerously steep hill tamed by 8 zig zag turns. City engineers created the switchback turns in 1922 to ease the drive and make the hill a bit safer. In the 1950's hydrangeas were planted in order to prevent curb erosion. The flowers are at full bloom in the summer which makes now a beautiful time to visit. Since we are entering the summer tourist season people watching will also be at its peak.

You can snap an amazing photo at the bottom of the hill. The view of cars making their way down flanked by million dollar real estate and hydrangeas in full bloom is breath taking.
