President’s Day celebrates the birthdays of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. It is celebrated on the third Monday of February. Both of these presidents were known for living in a log cabin. Students in grades k-1 can make a magnet of a log cabin.
To make this project, you will need
- Cardboard or scraps of mat board cut into triangles, rectangles and squares.
- Popsicle sticks
- White glue
- Peel and stick magnet strips
- Colored pencils
- Pictures of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington to draw from
Apply peel-and-stick magnet strips to two Popsicle sticks. If purchased strips are not available, advertising magnets can be recycled by cutting them into ½-inch strips. Use double-stick tape to adhere the magnets to the sticks.
Place the sticks parallel to each other, about three inches apart, magnet side down, in a vertical position. The dotted lines in the picture show how these sticks should be placed. Vertical means up and down. You can remember the difference between vertical and horizontal because V looks like an arrow that is pointing down, and H has a crossbar that goes right to left.
Apply a line of white glue to the vertical sticks. Place five more sticks in the horizontal position on the bottom of the vertical sticks. Cut a triangle of cardboard that is 5 ½ inches wide on the longest side, and about three inches tall. Glue it to the ends of the vertical sticks that are showing on the top. Cut a rectangle from cardboard for the door that is about 1 1/2 inches tall and 3/4 inch wide. Cut a one inch square for a window.
Draw a picture of Abraham Lincoln or George Washington on the window square, making it look like they are peeking out of the window. Draw the texture of boards on the door. Glue the door and window to the horizontal craft sticks. Let dry.

Assessment
- The student demonstrated an understanding of parallel, vertical and horizontal by placing the craft sticks in the proper alignment.
- The student used good craftsmanship when applying glue.
- The student made a choice of Lincoln or Washington, and drew a picture of a president in the window.
- The student drew the texture of wood on the door.
