Locust Grove Middle student headed for State Spelling Bee

HENRY COUNTY, GA – Kathleen Mabutin, sixth grade student from Locust Grove Middle School survived 68 rounds before succumbing to Jazz Duncan of Rockdale County during the District 5 spelling contest held at Mundy’s Mill Middle School on February 23.

Mabutin’s 2nd place finish garnered $100 and an opportunity to compete at the state contest to be held at Georgia State University on Friday, March 15.

Posting two consecutive 3rd place finishes in the local spelling bee, Mabutin’s goal is to compete in the Super Bowl of spelling bees – the Scripps Spelling Bee.

“I’m nervous actually,” said Mabutin when asked how she felt after earning a trip to the top competition in the state. “No matter what happens I will feel ok with how I did, because I am just a sixth grader and I have two more years to compete.”

With the state contest approaching, Mabutin has been prepping.

“There were places I looked online for previous years’ lists and saw the difficulty of those words, so I have tried to find patterns and groupings that may help me,” shared Mabutin.

There will be 19 competitors standing between Mabutin and a state title, but Mabutin likes her chances.
