Locker heading back to school, not the 2010 NFL draft

Everyone toss out your NFL QB prospect projections, because they guy at, or near the top of the list is headed back to school. In a statement released through the University of Washington, Jake Locker has announced that he will forgo the 2010 NFL draft and return for his senior season.

It seems very likely that Locker would have been amongst the first QB selected in the 2010 draft. This means that he would’ve end up playing for the St. Louis Rams, or the Cleveland Browns. Apparently returning to Washington who went 5-7 in 2009 is a better personal option for him.

Locker’s has a feeling of unfinished business at the University. This is not Tim Tebow returning to School to pursue another National Championship, or to earn another Heisman trophy.

This is a kid who led a 5-7 team, but with close a late season loses to Notre Dame, Arizona State, and UCLA, it could have been that much better. Those loses cost the Huskies a trip the a Bowl game, and it seems Locker would like to add that to his resume.

He is not the first College QB to go back to school, when he was projected as a high first round pick. Matt Leinart did so, and had a great final season at USC. Last year Sam Bradford did the same and ended up spending most of 2009 in a sling.

This is not a move without significant risk, but Locker is showing tremendous character is returning to accomplish his, and his team’s goals.

With the subtraction of Locker the 2010 QB prospect class looks something like this:

1. Jimmy Clausen, Junior, Notre Dame
2. Colt McCoy, Senior, Texas
3. Tim Tebow, Senior, Florida
4. Sam Bradford, Junior, Oklahoma
5. Dan Lefevour, Senior, Central Michigan
