Two Modesto wine shops host very different wine tastings this week, one from the "old world," and one from the "new." "Old" and "new," respectively, usually mean "Europe" and "Not Europe."

Tresetti's World Caffe will be visiting the New World this week, and specifically the Santa Cruz Mountains, when a representative of Storrs Winery pours a variety of their award-winning wines on Tuesday 2/23 from 5-7 pm. Storrs' Pinot Noir, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel won big at last year's San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, so this should be a great tasting. The cost of this tasting is $14.

On Friday 2/26, Sips Bistro's Friday Night Flights will feature Old World--specifically France's Loire Valley--wines. From 5-8 pm, Muscadet, Pouille Fume, Vouvray, and Chinon will be poured into the flight glasses. This tasting is $10. A small appetizer pairing is also available, as are Sips' usual bistro selections.

Help the local economy--and local merchants--and enjoy some wine this week!

Tresetti's World Caffe is at 927 11th Street in Modesto; the phone number is (209) 572-2990.

Sips Bistro is located in the Crossroads Shopping Center, 901 N Carpenter Rd, Ste 39; the phone number is (209) 527-7477

When not imbibing, he can be found watching classic cinema and working on his first novel. William...
