Local Traumatic & Grown Up Avenger Stuff - Off The Record with Jeff Hahne

The 3rd Wednesday of every month Charlotte’s Creative Loafing music editor, Jeff Hahne, hosts an Off The Record session at the Evening Muse with one or two local artists.  The sessions are entertaining, informal, and feature a little inquisitive prodding interspersed among the several acoustic songs in this intimate setting.

Some artists are very chatty and share every thought that comes to mind in their attempt to eloquently answer the question articulated, while others obviously don’t enjoy orating their inner feelings and would be much more comfortable simply sharing their musical talents!

During last night’s “Off The Record” Local Traumatic were in a chatty mood while Grown Up Avenger Stuff struggled to comprehend how anyone could answer the questions around the creative process used by an artist – it’s either about how love should be, or it isn’t.

The conversations were polar – as were the musical styles.

Formally Lyra Shines, The Local Traumatic are a young group performing Pop music true to their age and demographic primarily written by Julia and Christian and produced by Bruce Irvine.  The band stated that the primary reason for the recent name change and alteration to the line-up was an attempt to recreate themselves to be true to whom they feel their inner-selves are.  We’ll keep an eye on them to see who that turns out to be as they mature and develop a broader range and diversification.  They’re certainly some talented “clay” from which to mold a very popular sound.

Grown Up Avenger Stuff have been performing and having fun with Charlotte audiences for the past two years and have an almost cult-like following.  Known for their “Ninja” rock style it was a special treat for many to see them in an acoustic setting.  The intimacy found at the Evening Muse brought to the forefront the nuances and subtleties found in the harmonious musicianship and artistry that is Grown Up Avenger Stuff.

Certainly the most talented family band emerging in Charlotte today, with Hunter on bass & keyboards and Tyler on percussions/guitar/bass (or whatever he wants to play!) are certainly chips off the old block under the tutelage of their proud father, John Thomsen.  Combine those talents with the stunning vocal range, drive and power of Deirde Kroener and you have a group that can deliver a romantic ballad as soft as a velvety cabernet or a rawkin’ anthem worthy of a double shot of Jack Daniels!

Grown Up Avenger Stuff are currently in the process of creating a new album, which is eagerly anticipated by their fans throughout the region.  Your next opportunity to see them live will be March 10th at The Visulite Theater with The Local Traumatic and from Greensboro, House of Fools.

It was great to hear from these two local groups and a treat to hear them and gain a peek into their musical soul.  Thanks for sharing!
