The prep football national letter of intent signing day occurred this past week and several area prep stars inked their names in accordance therewith.
Three players from the 2013 Richwoods Knights will continue their gridiron careers at the next level. Two way player Daejgon Love will be an Illinois State Redbird next fall and he is projected to be a contributor at linebacker from the outset. Kicker Justin Cole will be setting his eyes on the goal posts up at North Central. And finally, while the 2013 Knights' squad was seemingly living on the road to the Quad Cities last season, star lineman Keith King, Jr will be doing so for four more years as he will now be a member of the tradition laden Augustana program.
The Dunlap Eagles also had three signees led by Davion McManis' commitment to McKendree College. McKendree has recruited the local area extensively in the past few years and Davion continues that trend. Teammate Treston Fowler will join King at Augustana while Jon Scheeler moves on to Truman State. And, last but not least, Pekin standout Cole Henderson signed a track scholarship with the University of Illinois and will concentrate his efforts therein. One has to wonder, though, if the Illini gridiron staff might give Cole a call given his all state football ability as well.
In any event, these young athletes are to be commended for both their achievements to date and commitments to the future. In an age where most talk surrounding college football involves boosters, mega-conferences, stipends, exploitation and TV contracts, it is indeed refreshing to report on these young man who are plain and simply going to have the chance to continue playing the game they love and get a fine college education as well.
