Local preps fare well at State track and field finals

The IHSA boys track and field finals were held this past weekend at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The greater Peoria area had several participants and all gave great effort resulting in fine showings.

Richwoods' senior Keith King, Jr. concluded an outstanding multi sport career for the Knights with a fourth place finish in the Class 2A shot put competition. In addition, sophomore Bryce Vollrath gives the Knights bright hope for the future as he placed twelfth in the discus. Overall, Richwoods wound up tied with several other teams for 40th place. http://www.ihsa.org/default.asp?Show=1&url=/data/TRB/2result2.htm

In Class 3A, Pekin's Cole Henderson brought home a first place medal in the 100 meter dash. He also placed a close second in the 200 meters and an even closer second in the long jump. In fact, the long jump competition wound up in a three way tie for first resulting in the judges deciding the final places based on the preliminary round results. Pekin, as a team, placed eighth overall. A fellow Mid Illini conference competitor, Davion McManis from Dunlap, placed fourth in the Class 2A long jump as well. http://www.pjstar.com/article/20140531/SPORTS/140539817/12700/SPORTS/?St...

It's now time for the school year to wind down, but take heart sports fans, the opening kickoff on the gridiron is less than three months away. It will certainly be interesting to see how new rules changes being implemented by the IHSA will affect teams' preparations, with particular emphasis on the restriction against using full pads in practice prior to the first day of the actual school year.
