Music City has its name for a reason, and with no shortage of songs finding their inception in this town, there is--in turn--no shortage of songwriters in need of venues to test drive their material, if you will.

Thus, there are songwriter showcases and open-mic opportunities at every turn, and thanks to Mozzarella Pizzeria, there's a chance to take a tasty pizza pie while also hearing original songs by their creators. On the first Saturday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m., the eatery places host to an open songwriter event sponsored by Hit Song Casa of Nashville.

Per the event's sponsor, Joyce Medlock, said "each writer can perform three songs he or she wrote. Sign up ahead of time or on arrival and play in order of sign-up."

Located at 3912 Lebanon Pike in Hermitage, Mozzarella Pizzeria is "a nice Italian family restaurant. (It's a) very clean, classy place, (with) affordable, delicious food and a friendly atmosphere," Medlock said.

As for the tunesmiths who share their songs, "I never know who will show up for this. ... It is an open venue. Sometimes there are half-a-dozen singer-songwriters and sometimes there are 20- 25 writers who sign up to sing," Medlock said. "Songwriters from all over the world perform at this venue and songwriters from all over the world stay at Hit Song Casa also."

This Saturday, Sept. 6, among those planning to perform is Texas-born, Nashville-reared singer-songwriter Dakoda Noel, who's never performed at the venue before, but hopes to share a few originals.

"This is my first performance in Music City," he said. "I am excited, but I know I have to step my game up because it's Nashville. I just performed in Texas in front of about 200 or so people, and it went well, but Nashville music lovers are accustomed to always-stellar performances."

Per Medlock, the monthly songwriter event "is always a fun event. From beginners to hit writers drop in and sing their songs. Everyone is welcome and it is open to the public. Every once in a while publishers and record label folks slip in to listen. If they hear someone they like or like their songs, they go up and talk to that writer before they leave. I let them have their privacy and don't single them out."

Mozzarella Pizzeria's monthly songwriter events are non-smoking shows, with all ages welcomed. Admission is free. For more information about the songwriter events, contact Medlock at 615-293-9500. For more info on Mozzarella Pizzeria, call 615-902-6040 or access its website.‎
