Local libertarians support jailed rights activist Julian Heicklen

News from the liberterrain...

Justin Oliver, a committed libertarian activist who frequently appears on the front lines of the freedom movement in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, announced a new Meetup for Ron Paul's Campaign for Liberty - Tarrant County earlier this week, a cause tailor-made for the armchair activist:

Letter Writing to Julian Heicklen.

Heicklen's arrest chronology:

  • 1. NY cops still manhandling peaceful activist

  • 2. Updates on libertarian political prisoners

  • 3. Updated update: Heicklen at Rikers

  • 4. Followup: Julian Heicklen, prisoner of Riker's Island

Heicklen is a fellow libertarian and jury rights advocate arrested on May 25 while attempting to distribute Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA) fliers on public property in front of the US District Courthouse in Manhattan.

He is currently being held in the New York City Jail at Riker's Island awaiting a scheduled June 8 hearing.

Since hearings have a way of being rescheduled or cancelled, and their outcomes don't necessarily result in a detainee's release, it's impossible to know how long Heicklen will be held.

(A Manhattan libertarian known as "Bile" follows Heicklen's situation closely. Visit his Blog of Bile for up-to-date changes in Heicklen's status.)

Heicklen is a tireless advocate for jury rights and is well known to readers of the companion news site, Libertarian News Examiner, which has covered nearly all of his FIJA outreach efforts since last fall.

Heicklen, at 78, has had a long career as a freedom activist and a history of being arrested, having participated in the civil rights movement and marijuana re-legalization sit-ins since the 1960s. He told a visitor at Riker's on Thursday that he is in good spirits and "has no fear."

"In a show of solidarity," Oliver said in his Meetup group announcement, "I would encourage everyone to write a letter to Julian to show your appreciation for him standing up for free speech and the rights of jurors."

Of course Justin Oliver is no stranger to readers of the Dallas Libertarian Examiner, which has chronicled his efforts to distribute jury nullification fliers at the Tarrant County Justice Center in downtown Ft. Worth and reported on his group's participation in both the Worldwide Marijuana March and the massive immigration rally in Dallas on May 1.

Details of Heicklen's arrest and incarceration are featured at Jailed Activists and many of his FIJA outreach efforts have been captured on YouTube videos.
