Local Jewelry Artist Spotlight: Meet Fitzy Sparrow (Fort Worth, TX)

Fifth in a series of Local Jewelry Designer Spotlights.  Meet Amelia, owner of Fitzy Sparrow in Fort Worth, Texas!

You can meet this artist and see her inspiring work in person this coming Saturday October 15th from 9am-5pm at the Cowtown Indie Bazaar in Fort Worth. See below for more details on this event and a complete list of upcoming shows for Fitzy Sparrow.

Amelia Wood will insist she's not really a naturally artistic person. Though art was always fun for her as a child, she says, it was never the passion that it is now. Remembering fondly how much she loved making tiny garland chains "from itty bitty pieces of paper" in elementary school, she thinks back to those earliest memories of being creative and seems almost bewildered at how a childhood fancy has evolved into a business where she gets to make her own schedule and make money doing what she loves!

Today, instead of tiny bits of paper, Amelia works with vintage pieces and builds works of art from a variety of components from disassembled old jewelry, sometimes mixing them with newer bits and baubles. "One of the most exciting things about being a creator," she says, "is finding new and different things to create with! Everything from lace to hardware gets used in my jewelry, and in many cases, the more unusual and older it is, the better....and a lot of the allure has to do with recycling old pieces. It’s not only better for the environment, but gives new life to the beautiful yet aged or worn treasures that I find."

Amelia has been running Fitzy Sparrow for almost two years now. She explains that the name comes from a children's book series about the young Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean, for those not in the know). "One of the characters was named Fitzgerald, but Jack always called him Fitzy, which annoyed him to no end. Somehow, from there I got the name Fitzy Sparrow."

When you visit Amelia's shop on Etsy, you'll find that her creativity flows over into the names she divines for each and every piece of jewelry. Every pair of earrings, every brooch, and every necklace has a name that is a work of art in itself; not only does every item have character, but you get the feeling that every item is a character--in a story of a far away place a long long time ago. The Empress necklace, for example, evokes a picture of demure but stately royalty and the Belfry Minuette necklace has an air of dark mystique, like a beautiful woman hiding in the shadows. Amelia's own favorites at the moment include A Balancing Act --a playful yet sophisticated necklace in a wonderful old style circus theme, and a pair of earrings called Cajun Lolita which she feels conjures the vibrant yet mysterious feel of the deep south with colorful ribbon and dimpled pearls. (Be sure to visit the slideshow to see photos of all these fabulous pieces!)

Amelia says that what her customers love most about Fitzy Sparrow is the fact that it’s unique, individual, and affordable. "Since I use mostly vintage supplies, much of my inventory is one-of-a-kind or limited in quantity, but I don’t want my customers to feel like they have to spend a small fortune for them." Her pieces are truly lovely!  Stop by and see her this weekend or visit her online to find trinkets and treasures galore!
