Three independent bookstores and a restaurant/gallery in Brooklyn are participating in a month long celebration of women who are children's book authors. Book Court, Greenlight Books, P.S. Bookshop, and Superfine will host these amazing women who have banded together in what Melanie Hope Greenberg, the author of Mermaids on Parade and the leader of this group calls, "a creative collective". According to Ms. Greenberg, ""Our collective is made up of professional women who leave an historical record in the field of children's literature and art. And the merchants who work alongside the author-illustrators bringing their books and art to the community."
The authors participating are: Melanie Hope Greenberg, Mermaids on Parade, Selina Aiko, Peanut Butter Big Brother, Pat Cummings, Harvey Moon: Museum Boy, Aileen Leitjan, Hugging Hour, Meghan McCarthy, Seabiscuit the Wonder Horse. All of them are residents of Brooklyn and picture book authors.
Independent bookstores offer value to the local community beyond selling books. By hosting and promoting local authors these bookstores help to raise the consciousness of local readers to the wealth of talent that is available in their area. When bookstores are able to organize and pool their resources this is very exciting, because it helps everyone.
The event begins Thursday, March 4th with an exhibition of the artwork from each author's picture book and ends on March 27th. There will be panel discussions and book readings from all of the authors. Knowing the caliber of the work of these picture book writers it is my recommendation that if you can attend any of these events you will be given a chance to see exceptional art work and excellent writing. Bring your children. This is definitely child friendly. In addition, it will give you a chance to learn about more excellent independent bookstores. If you live in Brooklyn this is a must! To see the schedule you can visit Melanie Hope Greenberg's blog: Mermaids on Parade.

Great article Barbara!
Melanie and Meghan,
I'm so glad you liked the article:) When I saw the event I wanted to let mire people know about it. I will try to come. Thank you for inviting me!
Awesome! Hope to see you in March!
Correction: Selina spells her name Alko not Aiko.:) Sorry Selina.:) It should be:
Selina Alko.
Thanks for a great article & for pointing out the importance of "shopping local & independent". In addition to the authors listed, Miriam Cohen will also participate. "Layla's Head Scarf" is the most recent of her many books. We at BookCourt are excited & looking forward to our turn on the 14th!
Very nice! Thank you. My last name is spelled Leijten.
It always gives me trouble...

It's great that these bookstores and the restaurant/gallery collaborated like this. How wonderful for lovers of children's books of all ages!
Aileen,
Please forgive me, I used the spelling I saw. I know how hard it is with spelling a last name. Try having Ehrentreu for awhile.:) Thank you for pointing that out.
Also apologize for leaving out Miriam Cohen's name from the participants. She certainly needs to be there in the article.
I am looking forward to meeting all of the writers on the show tomorrow.
