In celebration of the Art Center Gallery’s annual exhibition, Au Naturel: The Nude In the 21st Century, at Clatsop Community College, RiverSea Gallery, Imogen, Lightbox Photographic Gallery, Tempo, Old Town Framing, In De Hair Gallery, and Clemente’s Restaurant Astoria present Nudes Downtown: A Compendium of Art Inspired by Au Naturel. This multi-venue exhibition will run concurrently with Au Naturel, offering works available for viewing beginning February 7, 2014. The exhibition held at the seven Astoria venues will include invited artists from among those regularly represented and others invited especially for this show. All the venues involved have scheduled opening receptions for Nudes Downtown during Astoria’s Second Saturday Artwalk on February 8, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
Depictions of the human form, dating back to early cave dwelling societies, were some of the first blossoming of artistic expression, and part of the record of civilization. Representation of the human form in art has long been acknowledged as a significant source of inspiration, and for many artists the core of all artistic endeavors. It is with this in mind that once a year the Art Center Gallery of Clatsop Community College presents Au Naturel, a juried collection of paintings, drawings and prints selected from artists around the globe, honoring the importance of the nude as an art form. In support of the annual juried exhibition, a number of downtown art venues will present artwork celebrating this genre, thus expanding the concept beyond the boundaries of the campus. A diverse collection will be exhibited throughout downtown art galleries and supporting businesses, creating a unique and cohesive art walk entirely focused on the theme of humankind in its most elemental form.
The Nudes Downtown, 2014 art exhibit will run from February through the end of March. All galleries and businesses participating in this fourth year of Nudes Downtown, will be participating in the Second Saturday Art Walk, as well as other events scheduled throughout the two months at each of the seven galleries and venues.
