Lucas Overby for Congress Campaign staff and other Tampa Bay area Libertarians stayed up late Saturday evening, Aug. 31, to see Overby’s interview from the Saturday afternoon anti-war rally on Tampa Bay's Fox 13. However, the local Fox affiliate simply labeled the Congressional Candidate as a “protester” attending the rally, instead of rightfully identifying Overby by name and the office he is currently campaigning for.
On Sunday, Sept.1, after a deluge of emails from Libertarian Party (LP) activists across west-central Florida, Fox 13 Polk Bureau reporter Ken Suarez responded to Karena Bowers Morrison, the Social Media Director for the Overby Campaign. In his response, Suarez promised to work with the weekday news staff to correct the oversight, and take time to talk about Lucas Overby and his current campaign for Congress.
Information on LP Congressional Candidate Lucas Overby
Lucas Overby is the Libertarian Party’s (LP) Congressional Candidate looking to unseat District 13 incumbent Bill Young in the 2014 Election Cycle. Overby had attended the anti-war protest against Syrian military intervention at the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and Gandy Boulevard in South Tampa on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 31. Fox 13 interviewed Overby about his participation in the event.
The automated response from Fox 13
After Fox's apparent refusal to introduce Lucas Overby, and the office he is currently campaigning for, The Tampa Bay Libertarian Examiner, along with other Libertarians across west-central Florida, flooded the local Fox affiliate with complaints Saturday evening.
The automated response received by Examiner from Keith Bunce of Fox 13 reads as follows:
I will be out of the office, returning on Tuesday, September 10...If you have time sensitive information for the News Department please send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Assignment Desk at 813-870-9630 for assistance...Otherwise I'll respond to your mail when I return...Have a Great Day.
Ken Suarez responds directly to campaign about Saturday night’s omission
After receiving the unplanned deluge of Libertarian activists from across Tampa Bay Saturday evening and Sunday morning, Fox 13's Ken Suarez responded directly to Karena Bowers Morrison:
[I am] Not ignoring [yo]u guys. [I] Will get back to you when [the] weekday managers get in.
Morrison spoke with Examiner about the interaction with Suarez on Saturday:
I did enjoy our conversation with this reporter while we were waiting for his camera man to get crowd shots, and look forward to him correcting the report from this weekend's #NoWarWithSyria protest in Tampa. Thanks to everyone who already reached out to FOX 13 and filed a request to correct the report.
Correction expected this coming work week
All of the local Libertarians from around Tampa Bay and west-central Florida appreciated Suarez’s prompt response to their concerns over what appeared to be yet another intentional slight from the mainstream media regarding fair coverage of candidates outside of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Local Libertarian activists are looking forward to the Fox 13 coverage of the Lucas Overby for Congress Campaign. The Tampa Bay Libertarian Examiner will inform his readers of any updates regarding the expected correction during the upcoming work week.
