Local Focus: Earthquake here in Oklahoma

Ok Turkey, California, even Japan I would expect to have a story like this. But his is Oklahoma, no current volcanoes or magma to indicate there are fault lines. Still the Glass Hills in the area have been holding back a multitude of earthquakes over the years. Well protected we have not had to worry as other places about the effects or damages caused by such. This last weekend the worry has become present in our minds, many thoughts of why this is happening and why they are as high as records show.

The idea of fault lines running through the southern U.S. has been know for a long time. Oklahoma has, in the most distant past had volcanoes, but they are long since silent and dormant. The results of years of erosion has left the once dominant cones to be little more than hills to dot the scenery. There are fault lines in this region but because of the continental mass and the geography present they have not been too much of problem. Although in the 1800’s there was a mass blowout in Missouri, and it is expect there will be another one just like it soon. This has been described as an underground volcanic vent that builds up lava until it blows out the water and sand over it. The earthquakes in this region stem from this natural action, we hope and hope as well it is not a warning of more impending earthquake.

Oklahomans have suffered some damages, but at this time there has been no reports of lose of life. We are fortunate than as in many areas this is not the case and we were not even prepared for these events to occur. The tornadoes we know, thunder and lightening shows we have seen; we warn others from out of state what to do in such times. But now we have to ask what to do about earthquakes, once Californians are now telling us how to react under these matters. A different feeling to have others explain to you how to handle Mother Nature’s actions in your own home you have enjoyed so many years.

The last two “major” ones were close together, so we are hopefully there will be some rest from more of them. The first was said to have happened around 2:34 am on the Saturday morning. This was not even noticed by many although up till the second worse recorded for Oklahoma. But the big one was 10:38 pm on Saturday night, this one many of us felt for sure. There have been inspections done on state bridges and roads as many travelers are reporting damages. But there seems too little in the Stillwater area to report, at least I have not found any in my search for the day. Perhaps we are the ones looked upon with graceful eyes and protected thoughts.

The State of Oklahoma is here, we will be here and we survive as a community. We understand this, we intend to keep to the strengths we have, allowing then for a long future together. Our problems have not gone away, our disputes are still the arguments we talk about. Still we will hold out and find our way through the events that come, not willing to just give up. This was one of the last states to form, from the first land run to today we did not give up and will not tomorrow. We know to stay out of Mother Nature’s angry path, but when the ground is bucking, gaining speed to get out of the way is not easy. But we are still here, still alive and willing to keep going.  Ok…that was another one…just a minor one and no problem at all. So then just how many aftershocks are there going to be, and are the all timed to the same point of night? This has to be Mother Nature’s way of reminding someone of something. Who ever it is, tell her you remember!
