Marie Hall, founder and executive director of BeMoneySmartUSA (formerly YoungBizFoundation) has dedicated her life to promoting financial literacy for family life in the digital age.

“As heads of households, we need to ask ourselves how the Internet is being used at home. Entertainment? Knowledge? Networking? Education? To what end?,” said Hall.

In response to the “too big to fail” mortgage banking financial crisis, Hall observes that our generation has not made financial literacy a priority to prepare ourselves and our children for a prosperous life.

“The Internet is only as good as the reason for using it,” said Hall, who wants to see the Internet become a tool that promotes prosperity.

According to the Harris Interactive 2009 Financial Literacy Survey, “41% of U.S. adults, or more than 92 million people living in America, gave themselves a grade of C, D, or F on their knowledge of personal finance, suggesting there is considerable room for improvement.”

Hall wants families to know the Internet grants access to a plethora of financial educational materials. Many of the services are not integrated, and so they can be overlooked or underutilized.

Hall is referring to local resources like the Golden 1 Credit Union children’s program and other agencies and financial organizations offering financial literacy support including:

FDIC Money Smarts
MoneyWise (co-sponsored by Capital One)

BeMoneySmartUSA offers a series of workshops and summer camps for children 8 years old and up, and for parents - all scheduled to take place at Phoenix University in Roseville. The fees are modest, $25 or $30, as BeMoneySmartUSA is a non-profit with corporate sponsorships. The next workshop is June 17.

To register your child to secure a scholarship to attend a 3-day camp on personal and business finance this July (in partnership with the Roseville Public Library), go to:

We are pretending to be concerned with Financial Literacy here in Canada, but the problem is that when you look at bank products, like a Mortgage, Line of Credit, Credit Card or Car loan, we ask what the Interest Rate is. It's not the Interest Rate it is how the Interest is calculated. At the front end of a Mortgage, 80% of what you pay is Interest.
We need not only financial literacy but the tools to calculate and educate ourselves. Have a look at www.u1stfinancial.com/mitton and run an Analysis,,, then go to www.unitedfirstfinancial.com for more information. Regards
