Local farmers market makes fundraising delicious

Have you ever wondered how Sun Dog Farmers tomatoes would taste with H&F Bread  Co. ciabatta and Hope’s Gardens pesto?  Saturday’s Market Mashup at Peachtree Road Farmers Market is your chance to try delicious food combinations all for a great cause.

Market Mashup pairs farmers and purveyors of locally made foods on teams to create dishes that combine their specialties in inventive ways.  This year’s Mash-Ups 10 teams include vendors such as The Spotted Trotter Charcuterie, Red Queen Tarts and Indian Ridge, and are sure to create dishes that will excite market goers taste buds.

“This family friendly event is a wonderful chance for the community to celebrate local food and raise the $6,000 needed to pay for the city required police officers,” said Lauren Carey, Peachtree Road Farmers Market Manager.

City of Atlanta permit fees and regulations requiring police officers have made it difficult for local markets to cover these costs without aggressive community fundraising efforts.  Events like Market Mash Up are just some of the creative ways to cover these costs without raising market fees for farmers and vendors.

“We have been working very closely with the City of Atlanta Planning Department and Office of Sustainability to carve out a place for farmers markets in the zoning codes. We expect these new zoning amendments to go before City Council in October.  Current city code doesn’t allow for farmers to sell their vegetables directly to customers in a farmer’s market environment. Without farmers markets these farmers and local food producers will not survive.” said Carey.

Just like your favorite TV food competition, the winner of Market Mash Up will be decided by a panel of celebrity judges.  This year’s judges, Kim Severson, Atlanta bureau chief of The New York Times and Author of Spoon Fed; Christiane Lauterbach, Dining Critic, Atlanta Magazine & Knife & Fork; Jennifer Zyman, Editor, The Blissful Glutton and Eater Atlanta and Emily Smith, CNN Eatocracy Contributor are sure to make the judging just as interesting as the competition.

If you want to attend Market Mash Up, get there early.  Sales start at 9:00 a.m. with only 250 tasting tickets available for purchase. A $5 ticket gets you a taste of all 10 dishes from 10:00-11:00 a.m. tasting period.
