Local businesses and colleges see the value in good internships

Interns, long thought to be the business managers and executives go-for'ers (go for coffee, go for packages and messages), are now proving to be the company go-getters; meaning they are going and getting the brash new ideas for the organization.

Businesses now encourage colleges to fill the future employment pipeline and send them worthy interns. Air Products and Chemicals Inc., headquartered in Trexlertown, started their own Community Internship Program and donates $10,000 to each local college and university that has students participate.

In addition, these interns are working of large scale and important company projects, which give them real world experience that can use in the future.

The career service departments at educational institutions are now geared towards helping students find internship opportunities and ensure their transition into them is seamless. Penn State Berks not only holds career fairs, but connects their students to any internship opening listed from any Penn State campus or by any former students on the Nittany Lion Career Network.

Lehigh University does the same thing by using its online system for full-time and intern job opportunities. They have listing for both on the university's Career Information Network.
