Sydelle Moore is the CEO of Sydelle Cosmetics. She took time off from mixing her unique natural creations to share her personal hair story, advice and the inspiration behind her products.

Her hair story …

I was a big chopper. I went natural about 3 years ago to grow healthier hair. I hadn't really planned to cut off all of my hair, but after talking to my stylist, Hiwot at Salon Revive, we decided that was the best decision.

She was exactly right and I'm so glad that I listened to her. It took me a few more trims to get rid of all of my straight ends, but now my hair is completely curly and I love it!

Advice to those contemplating wearing their hair natural …

Do it and stick to it. It can be challenging at first, especially if you are the type of girl who likes to change hairstyles a lot.

There are so many videos on YouTube and numerous blogs out there that can help you come up with different hairstyles. I like to follow Naptural85, Wild Sunshine Bliss and Taren Guy.

Wild Sunshine Bliss is a local DC blogger and has a lot of great information about not only natural hair, but all types of natural products and eating well.

These ladies are so creative and have very different personal styles so it is easy to find something to suit anyone on their blogs.

The Inspiration behind Sydelle Cosmetics …

I was inspired to start Sydelle Cosmetics because I had such a negative experience with chemical-based deodorants and antiperspirants.

Like most people, I started out using the typical deodorants that you find in most stores. Those deodorants eventually stopped working for me and I started using antiperspirants.

Once chemical antiperspirants stopped working, I moved up to clinical strength antiperspirants that didn't work and scorched the delicate skin under my arms.

I'll never forget seeing a photo of myself at a barbecue in a sleeveless dress a few years ago and seeing that the skin under my arms was so badly burnt that you couldn't tell where my jet black hair ended and the skin under my arms started.

After I saw that photo, I decided that there had to be a way to stay fresh without hurting myself.

I took a look at the ingredients on my clinical-strength deodorant to see what ingredient might be causing such a severe reaction.

I was shocked by some of the ingredients I saw on the package -- especially the heavy metals.

I tried every natural deodorant on the shelf at Whole Foods and most of them failed or smelled like patchouli. Personally, I consider patchouli an odor, not a scent.

So, I did my homework and came up with a natural recipe that helped heal my delicate, damaged underarms and keep me fresh. It has really caught on among naturalistas all over the country.

More on Pampered Pits …

Pampered Pits in Almond Elegance is by far our top-selling product. Women love the scent and come back time and again (usually with a friend or two) just to say how much they love it.

A lot of women buy the matching Almond Elegance "Shea On You!" body butter by the case and give it as gifts to friends and co-workers. It has been a runaway success.

Sydelle Cosmetics also makes moisturizers and deodorants for men - That Anti-Smelly Stuff , and moisturizer for men, That Anti-Ashy Stuff.

Many cancer patients also use Pampered Pits as well as our men's deodorant "That Anti-Smelly Stuff" because the chemicals in many products on the market have been linked to cancer -- although inconclusively so far.

Cancer survivors, especially breast cancer survivors, are asked by their doctors to use special personal care products including deodorant, toothpaste and soap.

The main thing I would like to see women and men do is take a better look at how many different, unfamiliar and sometimes surprising ingredients are in the products that we use everyday.

Many of these products are tested for safety, but not many of these studies test what happens from daily exposure.

Our deodorants actually work and help people avoid these concerns about exposure to toxins.

We use natural, plant-based preservatives to keep our products fresh and have an active Blog and social media presence where we discuss health, beauty and wellness from the natural perspective.

Advice for others considering starting their own business …

Do your homework and make a business plan, but be prepared to adapt to customers' needs.

I have taken in a lot of feedback from family members, early customers and friends who continue to help me come up with ways to improve my products and better market them to people who need and want a natural deodorant alternative.

Rather than just going on a hunch, I recommend that businesses closely examine customer behavior and ask for feedback.

Business owners must have a deep knowledge and understanding of who their clients are in order to give them what they want.

My business has grown almost exclusively based on word-of-mouth marketing. You don't develop a massive cult-following for something like a deodorant without treating your customers right.

What the future holds for Sydelle Cosmetics …

Sydelle Cosmetics is working to get products into several organic and health food retailers in 2013.

Retailers make it more convenient for current as well as new customers to find our products, sample new scents and re-supply their beauty cupboard at a moment's notice.

We are all about customers being able to get Pampered Pits whenever and wherever they need it!
