Husband and wife team William and Crystal Cunningham are local entrepreneurs who have the goal of making their joint venture brand a household name.
Below Crystal and William share their thoughts on natural hair as well as the inspiration behind their joint venture …
Crystal’s natural hair journey …
I transitioned from relaxed hair to natural hair for six months and did my Big Chop "BC" on March 4, 2011.
I decided to go natural to obtain healthier hair and to discover what my hair was like chemical free.
Additionally, I did a self examination and questioned myself about why I did certain things in my life.
During this self examination I asked, "Why can’t my hair be the way it was created?"
I had no personal experience to validate why I should not be natural. Therefore, what society taught me to believe about natural hair no longer had validity.
This is what prompted me to begin my natural hair journey.
If a woman is contemplating wearing her hair natural I would suggest that she find a natural hair role model. A role model will increase motivation and provide inspiration during her journey.
William’s thoughts on his wife deciding to wear her hair in its natural state …
I have supported my wife’s decision to go natural 100%. I think it is great that she has embraced her natural beauty and stopped using unnatural products in her hair.
It is great to see her hair chemical free the way God intended her to be.
Crystal and William’s advice to those whose husbands/significant others are the reason why they don't wear their hair natural …
William: Just Do It! Your significant other should appreciate and support your decision to go natural. Your companion should understand that hair and vanity does not make a real woman.
Crystal: I suggest that the woman educate their partner about the benefits of becoming natural and let them participate in their personal hair journey to freedom and self-acceptance.
Inspiration behind their joint venture …
William: When my wife went chemical free with her hair she decided to rid our home of body products that were tainted with chemicals. Therefore, I had to shop for a deodorant that was chemical free.
I found a few products that would appeal to women and not both genders. So, I decided that this could be a grand opportunity to market a neutral gender deodorant stone to everyone.
Crystal: I decided to assist in the business to support my husband. William’s motivation and zeal for his product is contagious and I could not help, but to join in to help him reach is dream.
