Another Fell’s Point Festival has come and gone (and with it a part of my liver) and what an amazing weekend it was! Saturday’s weather was near-perfect and, while I was preoccupied with the Ravens/Steelers game Sunday, I hear it was another fantastic festival day. There certainly was a lot to see and do with all the local vendors and artisans and as usual, there were plenty of food options. (Although I did have to wait 40 minutes for a sub-par $8 crab taco) That said, every good festival needs music and this past weekend it was flowing prosperously out over the cobblestone streets.
I myself checked out a few nearby pubs, but spent most of my time at The Point on Thames St. Invisible Republic opened the day on Saturday with a mix of blues/classic rock covers and originals off their debut album Eleven. I was also glad to see my good friends from the rev. Jack Starr Band rock the crowd with a highly energized set with a bunch of tunes off their debut Adventures in Heartache with a Pocketful of Whiskey. I didn't catch The Mayan Factor, who played Sunday, but I heard some really good reviews and those guys always rock the house. The great thing about festivals like this is the opportunity to hear new bands and I was really impressed with two in particular that played The Point Saturday; The Treading Lemmings and The Phantom Limbs.
The Treading Lemmings have a distinct sound, reminiscent of The Smiths or The Stone Roses and dubbed “American Brit-Pop.” Catchy, melodic, and tasteful, bring your dancing shoes when you come to see these guys because they really throw down. Their new album Cliff Notes is out now and available on Itunes. Equally impressive were The Phantom Limbs out of Ocean City. These surf-rockers brought the heat to The Point with their unique fusion of retro nostalgia with modern lyrics about surfing and getting wasted. Their album Episode 1: Night of the Living Surf is also available on Itunes. Both bands have a great style and are definitely worth checking out. It’s the discovery of new sounds such as these that makes the Fell’s Point Festival such a worthwhile experience.
