Local bakeries create and display commemorative craft-inspired cakes

The American Craft Council is celebrating its 70th birthday in sweet visual style by partnering with cake designers and bakeries from across the Baltimore/Washington metro area to create and display commemorative craft-inspired cakes at the 35th Annual American Craft Council Show in Baltimore, Feb. 24-27, 2011 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Each cake designer chose their inspiration from a selection of handmade pieces that will be available at this year’s show and used the one-of-a-kind creations as the visual inspiration for their culinary masterpiece.  In honor of the Craft Council’s 70th birthday, the cakes will be on display on the Show floor amongst the thousands of handcrafted pieces presented by 700 of the nation’s leading contemporary craft artists.

Participating bakeries and cake designers are:

  • SugarBakers Cakes (Catonsville, MD)
  • Sweet Bakery (Baltimore, MD)
  • Art & Cake (Baltimore, MD)
  • Bakers Park (Catonsville, MD)
  • Herman’s Bakery (Baltimore, MD)
  • Cynthia Knox (Baltimore, MD)
  • Sue Sontag (Elkridge, MD)

“Cake designers and bakeries are producing pieces of art daily—much like the artists at our Shows. The Craft Council recognizes the artistry that goes into constructing culinary masterpieces and feels that there is no better way to honor the organization’s 70th birthday than by combining culinary art from the area’s top bakers and cake designers with the craft found at the Show,” said Pamela Diamond, Director of Marketing & Communications at the American Craft Council.
