Lobos' season ends with loss to Nevada

The New Mexico baseball team battled and battled all season. The Lobos just ran out of luck in a 9-4 loss in 11 innings to Nevada at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas on Friday night.

The defeat eliminated UNM (37-20-1) from the tournament and by all accounts ended the Lobos' season. UNM was ranked No. 58 in the RPI at the end of the regular season, too low of a ranking to earn an at-large bid barring anything unexpected.

The Wolf Pack (31-26) loaded the bases in the 11th on three straight singles. Kyle Hunt snapped the 3-3 tie with an RBI single to right field.

Carson Schneider came in for Victor Sanchez (4-1) and got Kewby Meyer to ground into a force out at home. The Lobos then turned to Taylor Duree, but he did not have his best stuff.

Duree hit Austin Byler to force in another run. Jay Anderson then made it 6-3 with a bunt RBI single.

After Duree struck out Justin Bridgman, Trenton Brooks hit a two-run single through the right side. T.J. Friedl then drove in the ninth run on an infield single.

UNM got a run back on Andre Vigil's RBI single in the bottom of the frame. The Lobos loaded the bases with no outs, but Aaron Siple flew out to left, Sam Haggerty struck out looking and Danny Collier flew out to left to end the game.

Chase Harris went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBI to lead a 15-hit attack for UNM. The Lobos, however, left 19 men on base for the game.

Starter Colton Thomson allowed two runs in six innings but did not factor in the decision. Sanchez took the loss as he was charged with five runs, four earned, in two innings of work.

UNM will lose six seniors, including Harris. Among the juniors, catcher Alex Real is expected to be drafted high enough to likely go pro.
