Livingston CA / Nov. 25, 2011 - City Council meetings are viewable live or at a viewer's convenience on Amazon.com's new Kindle Fire tablet computer, tests on Friday showed.
Kindle Fire becomes one of the first handheld computers to arrive compatible with the city's online video offerings.
Apple's iPad does not support the type of video webcast by the city, tests show, nor does it support webcasts from such larger organizations as C-Span and the UN.
Fire brings an additional way to view city council meetings, in addition to laptop and desktop computers and local television.
Charter Communications broadcasts regular city council meetings live on its Public Access Channel 2.
Online viewers can access live webcasts or view archived meetings here.
The city council meets first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m.
Council packets are also available online. The packets contain documents delivered to members of the city council with information designed to help them make decisions.
Personnel, litigation and other matters considered closed to the public under state law are not included in the webcasts or public council packets.
Efforts to increase public availability on the Internet began shortly after the 2010 election campaign ended.
Gurpal Samra, one of those elected in November, had promised to push for greater public access to documents and meetings during his council campaign.
