Welcome to the latest edition of Living Sustainably, the Vallejo Community Issues Examiner series that highlights the people and events that are redefining what it means to live responsibly on planet Earth.
Highway 37 - The first winter we drove down this narrow thoroughfare that connects Marin, San Francisco and such eastern Bay Area regions as Solano County, we were transfixed by its natural beauty - the many colonies of waterfowl, the great expanses of marsh and farmland. The second time we drove this Highway we were trapped for hours in car congestion as a result of a car accident.
This important roadway means a lot of things to a lot of motorists. And if environmental predictions come through, they will have more to worry about than traffic congestion as sea levels in this area are predicted to rise.
Next up: Road Ecology
Fortunately an emerging disclipline called Road Ecology identifies these issues. UCDavis Ecology Center is partnering with Caltrans transportation planners to anticipate and address impacts to Highway 37 in the coming years.
