Living in Nevada, choosing health in a land of temptation, part one

A lot of people who have never traveled to Reno or northern Nevada think it's just like Las Vegas, hot, crowded, all glitter, gambling, and glitz. It's true northern Nevada often has heat waves in July, but it also has snow storms in winter. Our view of the Sierra Nevada mountain range has snowy peaks from late September through early July. And northern Nevada sports some of the highest rated ski resorts in the world like Squaw Valley and Heavenly.

Our climate has distinct seasons while Las Vegas, 450 miles south of Reno, is much like Phoenix, Arizona – unbearably hot three seasons of the year and shirt sleeve warm in the winter. Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Carson City to a lesser degree, have their share of casinos, live shows and glittering neon. But northern Nevada offers a great deal more than Las Vegas in the way of outdoor sports and fitness activities all year round.

Rural northern Nevada, just minutes from Reno and other northern Nevada cities, is sparsely populated with scenic views, abundant wildlife, wide open spaces with mountain ranges, unfenced BLM land, and very dark nights with so few ‘city’ lights you can star gaze to your hearts content.

This abundance of rural land offers sports as diverse as boating, fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, horseback riding and swimming. And we northern Nevadans can enjoy our out of doors and still be spoiled by the opportunities in our nearby cities with their live performances, celebrity concerts, special events like the rib cookoff and and Artown, casino gambling, loads of specialty shopping. And of course, there are restaurants everywhere, hundreds of eateries, one at nearly every turn.

And it's the abundance and variety of affordable restaurant dining that is one of the main obstacles to a healthy lifestyle for northern Nevadans. In part two, we will explore just how overfed a northern Nevadan can be.
