Living Basil lets you grow herbs hydroponically on your counter

Living Basil, an ingenious product of Rocky Mountain Herbs, allows you to grow basil hydroponically on your kitchen counter -- even in the dead of winter.

If you cook with fresh herbs, perhaps you grow your own basil. But after the growing season ends, if you need fresh basil from the grocery store, you will pay quite a lot for a little bit of the herb.
But for about the same cost, you can purchase Living Basil, complete with a root ball. You can snip fresh basil leaves from the plant as it continues growing on your counter in a glass of water.
Mary Grant is a regional sales representative at Rocky Mountain Herbs, where the tagline is “Always thyme for you.” In an email interview, Grant noted that Rocky Mountain Herbs has been in business in Denver for three and a half years. The Rocky Mountain operation is the newest division of Herbco International, which Grant said is the Pacific Northwest’s oldest and largest organic culinary herb farm.

Living Basil is grown hydroponically and brought to market in plastic sleeves. Once I put Living Basil in a glass of water on my counter, how long can I expect the plant to yield?
As you are snipping the leaves from the plant for use in cooking, the Living Basil will continue to grow. I have had plants on my counter for 6-8 weeks at a time.

How do consumers care for Living Basil plants?
Always remove the plant from the plastic sleeve and place in a container once at home. This allows the plant to have air circulating and room to spread out.
Living Basil is grown in a hydroponic material, so there’s no need for messy dirt on your counter top. The plants do not need to be transplanted in dirt, and will continue to grow with the root ball attached, in plain water.
Every other day or every 3rd day, you’ll need to add about an inch of water to the small vase or mug that is holding the plants. This keeps the root ball moist.

What is the most common problem customers encounter with Living Basil?
The biggest problem arises when customers treat the Living Basil like a cut flower and water up the stem of the plant. Unfortunately, when this happens, the plant will rot and die quickly.

Living Basil’s instructions note that basil prefers cooler temperatures. But does Living Basil need sun to keep growing as basil does when grown outdoors?
Basil enjoys temperatures from 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Living Basil will do best on your counter, near a window. It does not require direct sunlight. Too much cold can definitely make basil wilt.

Is Living Basil grown organically?
The Living Basil plants do not hold an organic certification; however, they are grown without the use of fungicides, herbicides, or pesticides.

Where is Living Basil sold in the Denver area?
Customers can find the Living Basil plants at most King Soopers, Sprouts Markets, and Lucky Market.

Is Living Basil the only herb you sell in this form?
In the past, we have had Living Mint available, as well.

What is the average cost of Living Basil?
The market decides on pricing. Living Basil generally sells from $3-$5 for a sleeve (of two plants).

Living basil is a wonderful way to add fresh basil to any dish. It is very economical, too. Once basil is cut, the shelf life is about six to eight days. When you have a Living Basil plant on your counter, not only do you have a wonderful basil aroma in your kitchen, but also fresh basil leaves available anytime for your cooking needs.
