SAN BERNARDINO, CA- In continuation of the 'Living a Life of Purpose: Art & Rhythm' series, we will now go into the art segment of the series. There are a variety of elements to art. Art can be seen in art galleries on a canvas, it can be seen through tattoos (body art) and it can even be seen in the way that one chooses to style his or her hair. The way that we choose to do our hair, often times can depict our personality. Some like simple haircuts, while others love the more edgy, and risky hairstyles. It takes a talented and gifted hair stylists to cater to some of the wishes of their clients, which is why the search for the perfect stylists to match your needs can at times take awhile.
When searching for a great barbershop, in addition to finding someone who has experience and does a great job, one of the things that keeps clients loyal is the relationship that they build with their stylists. At Artistically Yours Barbershop, clients are able to do just that.
"My inspiration in starting the barbershop was that I wanted to create a setting for other people to give into the lifestyle of barbering," Alfred Parker, owner, said. "I'm also an artist. I draw, so I decided to take my art into hair, which is where the name Artistically Yours came from."
Artistically Yours Barbershop was started by Parker in 1996. Since it’s creation, there have been a total of three shops; one in Colton, one in Redlands and one in San Bernardino. However, due to the recent decline in the economy,
the shop in Colton and Redlands have closed, but the San Bernardino location is still booming after 18 years.
In addition to owning the barbershop, Parker is also a mentor and real estate agent. "I have fulfilled many things, but there is so much more for me to do," he say's.
Parker always uses his avenues to be able to give back to the community. He loves giving back to the nest generation because at one point in time he was in the exact same shoes that they were in, and when he needed the help there was someone that reached back and helped him to get back on track. By having the barbershop, it allows Parker to come in contact with different people from all walks of life, and to be able to make a positive and profound impact on their life.
"My life is a whole series of just helping people," Parker said.
Artistically Yours Barbershop started off as just a vision; however, as time went on God worked through Parker to help manifest the shop in becoming a community barbershop where people of all cultures can come in and feel "at home."
How did you know your purpose was in the hair industry?
One day I was cutting hair in one of my homeboy's bathroom, and as soon as I picked up the clippers I knew that I had a passion for cutting hair because as I started working with them (clippers), it seemed natural. Once I finished cutting his hair and we walked outside, others had seen how I cut his hair and they wanted their hair cut, and from there I became the neighborhood barber.
Once I mastered the trade and became certified, I knew I was in the right field for my passion because everything just clicked, from the advertising of the business to the support from the community. I had people from all across the U.S. coming to get a hair cut because they heard about my work. I was in like a matrix. It's hard to explain (Laughs).
What is your advice for others out there that are struggling to find their passion and purpose in life?
When you find your passion, you'll know because it will just happen naturally. I am blessed that I found it young because so many young people are looking to find their life's purpose and they don't know where to start, so they're out there going through everything, and getting in trouble. There's so many things that one can go through find their passion.
Since finding my passion, I never work because when I'm cutting, I'm in my zone and I love creating. I love challenges.
