Living a healthy lifestyle as a family

Single moms know that adopting a healthy lifestyle as a family is important. It does no good to try to teach children healthy living choices when mom is not following along. When everyone in the family makes an effort to live healthier, a family is more apt to be successful.

A healthy lifestyle includes things such as mental health, physical health, fitness and nutrition.

Mental Health: Families who play together are happier together. Spend quality and quantity time with your children. Talk often. Do things together, from fun activities to mundane errands. Make sure your days are not filled with stress for you or your children. Happy people are healthier people.

Physical Health: Be sure that you and your children are physically healthy. Visit your doctor. Get check ups. Ask questions. Weigh the pros and cons of each immunization, each medication and each procedure before making final decisions.

Fitness: Exercise is very important. Walk whenever you can, to run errands and just for fun. Exercise as a family, at home or in a gym. Check out the Let's Move website, and purchase a couple of family workout DVD's.

Nutrition: Good nutrition is essential to a healthy body. Figure out the serving sizes for each food group for every person in your family. Your toddler should not be eating as much as your teenager. Check out ChooseMyPlate.gov, and read this Healthier Food Act article. Talk with a nutritionist if possible. Search out true organic sources for food, or grow your own organically using organic seeds from trusted companies.

A healthy family needs to be the ultimate goal of every household. Healthier people have less health problems, and are happier in general.
