Liverpool considers naming street after a Beatle

The Liverpool City Council has a list of people it would like to honor with street names and one of them was a Beatle. It's not John, George, Paul or Ringo, but none other than Pete Best. They want to honor him for his "special contribution" to the city.

Longtime Beatles fan Jean Grimes is leading the campaign for Best's honor. "Pete is a fantastic ambassador for the City of Liverpool," he told Click Liverpool. "He had such an important hand in creating what is still the most famous band on the planet today. It really is about time the Council recognised the importance of his role.

Best is said to support the decision. Grimes says he suggests the honor be in West Derby where Best first played with the future Beatles as the Quarrymen in his mum's Hayman's Green home.

I totally agree with this 100%! Pete was in the Beatles as they started out as Liverpool boys, forging their craft together for two amazing years. He has always lived in Liverpool and he's a wonderful ambassador for the historical and cultural significance of what the Beatles did for Liverpool, especially through preserving and making available the Casbah Coffee Club to worldwide travellers.

I now declare Peter Best Boulevard open!

Liverpool already has street named after JPGR, but I don't agree that Pete Best should have a street named after him. He got the sack from the group although he was a member at one time, so was Stu and people like Tommy Moore and a few other short term stand ins. Do they have streets named after them in Liverpool?

Pete has continued to be involved with the community and, more importantly, is still doing shows. I think it's a great idea.

Pete deserves something like this. He was given the shaft (even though I love Ringo) and it must have been hard for him to watch them grow in fame. He conducted himself with dignity about the entire thing rather then write a tell-all book about their escapades in hamburg. go, Pete!

Pete is well deserving of such an honor. Anyone who has heard him drum knows that he wasn't given the boot because of poor playing. I don't think John's ego could handle all of the girls screaming "Pete!" at their shows.

A nice honor that's better late than never.

I think it's a fitting honor for Pete. He has remained in Liverpool all these years and as Steve noted, has been a member of the local community and a good guy.

I feel it´s a well deserved honor. In fact, it could become a landmark for Beatles pilgimages to Liverpool including Charles Rosenay´s ones. I´d love to be there once it is official.

Sorry, I agree with Poly, he wasn't responsible for putting Liverpool on the map in the 60s, John Paul George and Ringo were. I have heard him play, and yes, he's quite good, etc. etc. but that doesn't warrant him this kind of honor.

Hooray for Pete! He put in two solid years with The Beatles and a lifetime in Liverpool. A little recognition like this would be nice for him. I think even Paul & Ringo would agree.

I'm 100% for Pete Best having a street named after him. He was a Beatle and no one can ever take that away from him. It all started at the Casbah club. For those who disagree check your research on him as he played a very important part of the Beatles success for the short time he was with them.. They were huge in England and Germany before they even made it to the states all do to Pete's contribution.

Liverpool has streets named after a guy who owned a rope factory, the inventor of the goal net, a tax collector, slave merchants and the first person to die in a car accident. Certainly there is room in this pantheon of thoroughfares for the gent who first put the Beat in the Beatles.
